Reddit Will Test a Login Wall as Google Search Referrals Fall
Reddit is going to require most visitors to sign in. In its third-quarter letter to shareholders, published on 29 October 2026, the company said it is “shifting Reddit to a logged-in-only experience”, with a full test beginning this quarter “in select markets outside the U.S.” whose results “will inform an optimized version of logged-in-only Reddit globally.” On the earnings call the same day, chief executive Steve Huffman said: “This is a test, but we are going to make this transition.”
The same letter reported that Reddit’s search referral traffic “was down meaningfully in Q3, with the decline accelerating later in the quarter”, and that during October “search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week.” Reddit did not give the weekly total that figure is measured against. Asked on the call what had changed at Google, Huffman put AI Overviews and AI Mode first.
Why Reddit is moving to logged-in only
The letter gives four reasons, and Google is not one of them. Being signed in means users “can find the content and communities most relevant to them”; it gives Reddit “more signals for ads targeting”; it “allows us to protect access to Reddit’s extremely valuable corpus of data”; and it “helps us better adapt to emerging regulations around the world.”
The scraping reason got the most detail on the call. Huffman said “the vast majority of the scraping and stealing of Reddit happens in our logged-out user base”, and, asked whether the change would make Reddit impossible to scrape, answered that it would make it harder: “It’s not impossible.” The money follows the same line: logged-in and app users account for more than 80% of Reddit’s monetisation, and Huffman said Reddit would “likely be trading reach for engagement.”
Search does shape that trade, even though it is not a stated reason. The letter says the referral decline hit “logged-out and web traffic” hardest, and Huffman described Google’s change as “in line with our strategy because Google is teaching people that if you want to come to Reddit, you need to come to Reddit.”
What logged-out visitors will still see
That is what the test is for, and Reddit has not decided. Huffman said Reddit wants people to “go to reddit.com and get a taste of Reddit” and wants “link sharing or post sharing on Reddit to continue to work”. The boundary has to work for someone “coming from a shared link or maybe from search themselves”, and “there will be some version of Reddit accessible for those moments before we do that hard prompt.”
Reddit has not named the test markets. Neither the letter nor the call says what Google’s crawler will be served once the wall is up; Huffman’s only remark on crawling was that “Google is crawling us as hard as ever.” Asked about the data licensing agreements with Google and OpenAI, he said nothing announced on the call “doesn’t change our perspective there” and that Reddit is “in active discussions”.
What Reddit says Google changed
Huffman called his explanation a hypothesis with two parts. The biggest, he said, is AI Overviews and AI Mode, which Google “appear to be expanding… quite aggressively both in the U.S. and outside”:
What started as a feature is now the full search experience. And at the minimum, it pushes everyone down the search page. And then on top of that, the experiences themselves are not traffic drivers.
The second part: “we believe our machine-translated content is also being ranked lower”, which he said would mainly affect Reddit outside the US.
He was explicit about the limits of that reading: “we don’t have visibility into this.” He ruled out a fall in demand, saying the word Reddit remains among the most searched on Google, and later went further:
The AI Mode does not drive traffic, not for us and not to anybody as far as I know.
Google’s own published position is the opposite. In August 2025, Liz Reid, then VP and head of Google Search, wrote that “total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year” and that Google was “sending slightly more quality clicks to websites than a year ago”, meaning clicks where the user does not quickly return to the results page. That statement predates the expansion Huffman describes.
Reddit’s own user figures show where the loss lands. Daily active uniques, Reddit’s count of distinct visitors in a day, were 130.3 million worldwide in the third quarter, up 12% on a year earlier, but US logged-out daily visitors fell 4% to 27.3 million while US logged-in visitors rose 1% to 23.4 million. If October’s rate of decline continues, Reddit expects total daily visitors to fall by a “low-double-digit percentage” in the fourth quarter.
What Reddit’s login wall means for SEO
If Reddit threads rank for your brand or product queries, or Reddit sends visitors to your site, part of that audience in the test markets will reach a partial thread and a sign-in prompt instead. Reddit has not said which markets, so you will not know in advance whether yours is one. If Reddit is a referrer you report on, add an annotation in GA4 when the test starts and compare Reddit referrals by country rather than in total, so a fall in one market is not averaged away.
If a tool you rely on reports Reddit mentions or Reddit results, ask the provider how it collects them. Reddit’s reasons for the change include making logged-out scraping harder, and a tool that reads Reddit without an account is the kind it is aimed at.
The wider point is one the Reddit SEO page already makes about AI citations: Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell 86% in August 2026 with nothing about the content changing. It now applies to people as well as AI systems: whether a reader can see what is on Reddit is Reddit’s decision. Reddit does not sell itself as a route into AI answers either. Asked on the call whether brands were advertising on Reddit to show up in large language models, the practice known as generative engine optimisation (GEO), chief operating officer Jen Wong said:
We’re pretty skeptical of GEO. Reddit itself is pretty inoculated to like manipulation, I would say.
She added that it is “not a core piece of what we do with our advertising partners today.” Reddit participation is still worth doing for the signed-in audience it reaches. The answer you need people to find belongs on a site you control.
