Shopify has extended its WebMCP tools into checkout. WebMCP is a proposed browser standard that lets a page register tools an AI agent can call, rather than the agent reading the page and simulating clicks. Since 5 August 2026 every Liquid storefront has registered tools for catalogue search, product pages and the cart, stopping at the hand-off to checkout. On 28 September Shopify’s developer changelog added four checkout tools, get_checkout, update_checkout, complete_checkout and navigate_to_storefront, which act on the checkout open in the shopper’s tab and need “no new APIs or merchant configuration”. An agent cannot change the items or enter new card details: it can select a buyer’s saved Shop Pay card or use a Shop Pay approval it already holds, while Shop Pay login, payment challenges and checkout app extensions return control to the buyer on the page. Shopify’s documentation tells agents to show the buyer the order and total and “get their permission to place it” before calling complete_checkout, and says agent support is limited to Chromium-based browsers.

For a Shopify merchant, the checkout setup now decides whether a browser agent can finish the purchase. The standard three-page checkout registers the tools only when the buyer pays with Shop Pay, and B2B checkout, embedded checkout, checkouts in Shopify’s mobile checkout SDKs, draft orders and order edits get none, so on those the agent hands the buyer back to the page. Neither the storefront nor the checkout documentation describes a way to switch the tools off. For anyone scoping agent work on a Shopify store, the catalogue, cart and checkout actions are already covered by the platform, so a custom WebMCP build for them would duplicate what Shopify ships.
