Google Rolls Out AI Overviews in the UK

Google confirmed the rollout of AI Overviews in the UK on 15 August 2024, three months after the feature launched in the United States in May 2024. The expansion was part of a six-country release that also brought AI Overviews to India, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil.

What the UK rollout means

AI Overviews generate a synthesised answer to a query using Google’s Gemini model, drawing from multiple indexed sources and surfacing the response before any organic results. The feature had been live in the US since May 2024, where its traffic impact on informational content had already been well documented.

Google went on to expand AI Overviews to over 100 countries in October 2024. For UK-based publishers and SEO practitioners, the August launch marked the point at which AI Overviews became a first-order consideration for domestic traffic, rather than a US-specific phenomenon to monitor from a distance.

What changed at rollout

The UK version launched with the same core behaviour as the US product: AI Overviews appear for a significant proportion of informational queries, with expandable citations beneath the generated answer. Users can tap through to source pages, but many queries are answered without any click being required.

Google confirmed at launch that UK AI Overviews would:

  • Draw from UK and global sources
  • Apply the same quality and accuracy thresholds as the US version
  • Show citations from sites Google’s systems identify as authoritative for the query

Traffic implications for UK publishers

Early data from UK SEO tools showed click-through rate declines ranging from 15% to 45% on informational queries that began returning AI Overviews. The impact was most pronounced on queries answered by a single, concise response: definitions, how-to explanations, factual lookups.

Queries requiring nuanced judgment, local knowledge, or personal experience showed less disruption. Commercial and transactional queries were largely unaffected at rollout.

What publishers should do

The strategic response for UK publishers is the same as it was for US publishers in 2024: audit which queries in your traffic are now returning AI Overviews and assess whether your content is being cited. In Google Search Console, a declining CTR on stable or growing impressions is the clearest signal that an AI Overview is capturing the click.

For content that is being cited, the focus shifts to maintaining and deepening that authority. For content that isn’t, the question is whether the page can earn a citation, or whether the strategic investment is better directed toward queries where clicks still happen.
